Why You Should Be Excited About Windows 7 (Unless You Use A Mac)

Gizmodo has an excellent article on some of the improvements for Windows 7 over Vista. Personally, I never had much of a problem with Vista. I know few people who did, actually. I do admit that there has to be some truth to the pummeling it has taken over the past few years, or Microsoft would have absolutely denounced them long ago. From the looks of this article, they won't have to when 7  is released.

The article goes into some of the major improvements, which I will outline generally (I didn't do the research, I can't take the credit!)
  • Applications running on Vista should run on Windows 7.
  • Systems running Vista will see an improvement in speed.
  • Notebooks should get better battery life.
  • Windows 7 will be more reliable from the gate.
Having said all that, one must take into consideration how these things will be accomplished. Some of the new features and improvements outlined in the article are:
  • Windows 7 window memory manager
  • Application Crash Resiliency
  • Problems Step Recorder
  • "Sandboxed" device drivers
  • All hardware updates via Windows Update
  • Better background management
  • battery efficiency reporting.
It sounds like Windows 7 will be what Microsoft wanted Vista to be. Hopefully, it will be and more. My big question is...will Microsoft make the upgrade cheap to get people away from Vista?

802.11r Standards Completed Before 802.11n

According to an article on Gizmodo, the new standard for 802.11r, for wireless roaming, has been finalized before 802.11n. This is pretty sad considering n has been in the market for at least 2 years now.

Cuil is Google Rival From Ex-Google employees

The new search engine site Cuil opened today. As the pic shows, it has over 121 BILLION pages at your disposal. I searched Google and got several thousand results.
According to Giz, this site was created by former Google employees. The site is pure black and blue loveliness. Simple, yet effective. Just like...Googles'!
Time will tell how well this venture will fly. It can't be any worse than MSN Search!

ICANN...Get My Domain Named Jacked!

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, recently got their domain named high jacked! The jacking lasted a brief period of time, around 20 minutes, before reclaiming the name.

Windows Update Getting...an Update!

For those of you out there who are using Vista and have seen the sluggish, beastly application know as "Windows Updater," then this will be good news for you. Windows Vista updater is getting of all things...an update!

This is great news to me. I spent a good portion of the weekend getting SP1 for Visual C# Express Edition (so it will run on Vista) and it took damn near 6 hours to complete.

Slow? Snails passed the updater! Hopefully this will be better!

Pioneer Pushes Blu-Ray Discs to 16 Layers, 400GB Capacity

According to Gizmodos' site, Pioneer (Panasonic?) is working on a 16 layer, 400GB Blu Ray disc. That's a sweet thing if it ever becomes fiscally reasonable for large server backups and what not.

Super Computer Sets Processing Record

An IBM Super Computer once again broke the processing record with a recorded 1.026 quadrillion calculations per second.

That's some serious crunching, even for a super computer. IBM also owned the previous record.

The article states that the super computer runs 116,640 processor cores! DAMN!

OLPC XO Laptop 2.0 Has Dual Touchscreens

If this article is even close to being accurate (which we hope it is!) then this is going to be a great boost for the OLPC group.

Pictured above is someones idea of what the OLPC 2.0 would look like. It has 2 touch screens and is much smaller than it's predecessor.

Since the OLPC group never got to their original price mark to begin with, I doubt this thing will be ported around by poor African kids anytime soon or ever.

When Asus Eee Laptops Go Bad

This article on Gizmodo.com shows some crooks rigging an ATM to steal peoples personal information, like credit card numbers, via an Asus Eee PC.
Obviously, it is not as easy as buying an Asus PC, but this was the tool they decided to use! Not a good marketing ploy, but it gets the Asus name out there!
